Minmini Movie Review: A Calm and Poetic Journey

Plot: “Minmini” tells the story of two schoolmates Pari Mukilan (Gaurav Kalai) and Sabari (Pravin Kishore), who share contrasting personalities at a boarding school in Ooty. While Pari is outgoing and mischievous, Sabari is introverted and deeply connected to art. The story takes a turn when Pari sacrifices his life to save Sabari, leading to his organs being donated to Praveena (Esther Anil).
Rating: 3/5

Performance: Pravin Kishore as Sabari and Esther Anil as Praveena deliver heartfelt performances particularly in the second half of the film. They convincingly portray the emotional burdens their characters carry. The younger versions of their characters. However seem to have more depth and room to explore their emotions, adding layers to their personalities.

Music: The music in “Minmini” is subtle and aligns well with the film’s tone. It complements the story without overwhelming the narrative allowing the visuals and emotions to take center stage.

Technical Aspects: Cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa deserves praise for capturing the serene landscapes of Ooty and the Himalayas. His lens brings out the poetic essence of the film. However the editing choices, particularly in key emotional moments. somewhat disrupt the narrative flow, leaving some scenes feeling disjointed.

Positives:

  • Scenic Visuals: The film beautifully captures the landscapes of both Ooty and the Himalayas making them integral to the story.
  • Soulful Storytelling: Halitha Shameem’s intent to tell a story that is calm, introspective and different from the usual is evident, particularly in the film’s second half.
  • Performances: Both leads manage to bring out the emotional struggles of their characters, adding authenticity to the narrative.

Negatives:

  • Inconsistent Storytelling: The shift from the non-narrated first half to a narrated second half creates a slight inconsistency, affecting the film’s overall flow.
  • Missed Emotional Depth: The screenplay occasionally falls short of delivering the emotional depth required for such a sensitive subject, especially in conveying Sabari’s internal struggles.
  • Editing Choices: Some editing decisions, such as cutting away from critical emotional moments, rob the film of its potential to connect deeply with the audience.

Verdict: “Minmini” is a calm and visually stunning film that attempts to explore deep emotional themes. While it succeeds in many areas, it struggles in maintaining a consistent grip on the audience’s emotions. With strong performances and beautiful cinematography, it is a decent and watchable film, though it may leave you wishing for a bit more depth in its storytelling. A balanced 3/5 for this poetic yet slightly uneven journey.
